Review growth playbook — get more reviews, legally
✅

Do this — proven & compliant

• Just ask — everyone. Asking is the #1 driver; ask every customer, not only the happy ones.
• Ask at the peak moment — right after a finished job or a great visit.
• Make it one tap — direct Google review link, QR code, tap-to-review card, SMS/email link.
• Automate the follow-up — a post-visit text/email on a steady cadence (not bursts).
• Train staff to ask in person and hand over a card.
• Respond to every review — Google rewards engagement and it nudges others to post.
• Put a review CTA everywhere — site, email signature, receipts, thank-you page.

Sightline automates the ask + follow-up
⛔

Never do this — gets you penalized

• No incentives for Google reviews — discount, gift, credit, loyalty points, prize draw. Google bans all incentivized reviews; reviews get removed and listings penalized.
• No review gating — you can't send happy customers to Google and unhappy ones to a private form. Ask everyone the same way.
• No buying, writing, or AI-faking reviews, and nothing offered to change or remove a bad one — the FTC rule (in force since Oct 2024) carries penalties up to ~$51,744 per violation.
• No incentive tied to a positive review — even disclosed, a sentiment-conditioned incentive is illegal.

Compliance guardrail

The one honest answer on incentives

Clients always ask: "Can't I just give a discount for a review?" Here's the straight answer.

For Google reviews — no. Google prohibits any incentive in exchange for a review, and that's the platform you most want, so incentives are off the table there. Federally, the FTC permits a neutral, disclosed incentive ("leave a review — any review — for a discount") only if it's never conditioned, even by implication, on the review being positive — and the incentive must be disclosed. The safe, durable play is to not tie rewards to reviews at all: reward loyalty and great service generally, reward your staff for asking (never for reviews obtained), and win on frequency + ease of the ask. That's what actually grows review counts without risking removal or fines.

Sightline marketing engine · internal. Local SEO, content and social are delivered as a managed monthly service; reviews, reputation defense, analytics and the AI assistant are live in the product. Always follow Google's review-gating rules: ask all customers, never only the happy ones, and never offer incentives for reviews.
